COMPUTER APPLICATIONS USING MICROSOFT OFFICE (CMPTR APPL)

| A one-year course in which students use IBM compatible computers to
develop basic keyboarding skills as well as developing word processing, spreadsheet, and
presentation skills using Microsoft Office 2000 software applications.
In the first semester the student masters the keyboard and begins to learn the proper format for letters and reports. Formatting reports in MLA Documentation Style is taught in the report format unit. Resume and cover letter formats will also be introduced. In the second semester the students learn basic, intermediate, and advanced word-processing features using Microsoft Word. In the process of further developing keyboarding and word-processing skills, students will improve their grammar, problem solving, proofreading, and composition skills, along with their ability to follow directions. Through the use of Windows 98, 2000 and/or XP, students will continue to work with Office 2000 by becoming actively engaged in spreadsheet and computer presentations by using Excel and PowerPoint. An introduction to desktop publishing and web design skills will complete the second semesters’ work. With the dependence on computer literacy, in college and beyond, this course is highly recommended for all students. Text and materials fees: $50. WEB DESIGN (WEB DESIGN)

| PREREQUISITE:Minimum grade point average 2.0. Completion
of a basic keyboarding class, ability to type at 25 words per minute, or recommendation of
instructor. Text and materials fees: $50.00. In order to keep the textbooks current,
books are purchased through the Business Department on a yearly basis.
This course covers basic web page design and construction. Students are introduced to creating and controlling HTML scripted documents, adding graphics and links, and working with forms, tables, and frames. Later in the course, students use WYSIWYG programs, as well as HTML code, to design and produce their own web pages in online communities. Students also periodically work in our virtual class studio at Yahoo, analyzing projects and sharing links. This elective is meant to be informative but creative; grades are based on the practical application of web skills and design principles. Text and materials fee: $50. | ||
ADOBE PHOTOSHOP (PHOTOSHOP)

Microsoft Office Professional or recommendation of instructor. Text and

This course introduces the digital imaging technology of Adobe Photoshop 7.0, a powerful graphics and manipulation program. Students learn the toolbox and fundamental elements of the program, produce original artwork, correct color, retouch photos, and design composite scanned images. Working independently, they create projects using various tools, layouts, and designs, some including desktop publishing. Text and materials fee: $50. | ||
MEDIA COMMUNICATIONS (MEDIA COM)

| Media Communications will not be offered in 2007-2008. (This class also fulfills a Humanities class requirement at UHS.) This course is designed for anyone interested in technology and mass media. Students work in a stimulating environment with online computers and other materials. Topics include the Internet; issues of privacy, control, and integrity in our “Information Society”; past and new trends in mass media (TV, radio, ads, news, film, magazines, art, music) and personal interactivity (traditional and cybercommunications). Students experience and evaluate professional media as well as create their own projects (online and off). By the end of the semester, students will have a virtual portfolio and greater understanding of media’s power and innovation. | ||
COMPUTER-BASED DESIGN (COMPTR DESIGN)

| Computer Based Design is for beginning students; no previous art experience is necessary. Course work emphasizes improvement of drawing ability and the understanding of the elements and principles of art. Computer-based drawing, painting and design techniques will be introduced through the use of Adobe Illustrator. Fee: $25. | ||
GRAPHIC DESIGN (GRAPHIC DESIGN)

| PREREQUISITE: Completion of Computer-Based Design, Studio Art, or Art I Graphic Design involves a world of dynamic concepts and ever-changing ideas. It is the process of visual communication that runs throughout our daily lives, whether it is as simple as a traffic sign or as complex as sign language. The basic teaching methods will revolve around personal and innovative thought in visual problem solving. This course will emphasize conceptual thinking through research-based problem solving and creativity that pushes the student to “think outside the box”. This course is designed to prepare and motivate students to pursue the graphic design field as a career. Projects will vary from free-hand drawings to computer-based designs using programs such as Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Fee: $50. | ||
