By George Dickie Zap2it Rusty Wallace may be retiring from NASCAR Nextel Cup competition at the end of this year, but that doesn't mean you'll find him lounging around the country club. Wallace, you see, has plenty on his plate away from his No. 2 Dodge.

He is full owner of Rusty Wallace a Busch Series team making its first full-season run in 2005; he's part owner of a Cup team, Penske Racing South; and he has several car dealerships. He's also helping his 17-year-old son, Steven, who is running his first season in the Hooters Pro Cup Series. With only so many hours in the day, something had to give, and that turned out to be his 21 -year Cup career, during which he has amassed 55 wins, a points title in 1989 and top 10 points totals in 16 of the past 19 years. But if there is one thing the 48-year-old Missouri native would like to accomplish this year, it is to finally win a Daytona 500. He'll get one last shot at taking the checkered flag in the "Great American Race" Sunday, Feb.

20, when he takes to the track at Daytona International Speedway against a field that includes Jeff Gordon, Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson, Mark Martin, Matt Kenseth, defending race champion Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 2004 points champ Kurt Busch. Viewers can catch all the action on Fox. Wallace recently discussed his long career and looked ahead to his 22nd season behind the wheel. Does it seem real yet that this is the last year? No, it doesn't.

Ifs just amazing how fast tilings happen. We were talking earlier. I said, "God! I just remember coming in for my very first race in 1984." I remember going to Daytona. I remember driving the Gatorade car, and I remember coming out of the back straightaway at Daytona, and the rear end broke, and the rear end flew out from under me. I remember winning my first race and all these different things, and ifs just hard to believe that 21 years just went boom, gone.

But I love what I'm doing. I'm at the top of my game, still. But I've always said, "God! I want to go out on the top of my game." What do you want to accomplish this year? My No. 1 goal is to win the Daytona 500. I've never won it I've almost won it three or four times.

We tested really well down there, so I feel really good about it No. 2 goal is to get the car in the top 10. And No. 3 goal is to win the last race of the year at home. Wouldn't it be cool to win and close 'em out? Say, "You know, I had a great career and I did it my way." And I won't look stupid out there running around.

Of what accomplishments are you proudest? The accomplishment I'm probably proudest of is being voted one of the top 50 all-time drivers in NASCAR. That was a good one. I'm proud of being crowned the short-track king. I'm proud of all the road course wins that I've had. That's been really good.

I really love working with my sponsors. I love doing speeches. I love going around the country trying to meet the sponsors' goals and I feel like I'm pretty good at that and I enjoy doing that That's been one of my crowning achievements, I guess you could say But on the racetrack, performance-wise, like I said, all them short-track wins, all them road course wins. It's been something I think about all the time. You've placed in the top 20 in points in every one of your seasons and in the top 10 in 16 of the last 19.

To what do you attribute your consistency? I've been able to surround myself with good people, No. 1 No. 2 is just to keep my head in the game when it comes to the setup of the car. You know, we can do everything in the world, but when they bolt your ass in that car and you gotta go out there, that thing has got to handle right If it doesn't handle right, you don't win, you don't get the accolades, you don't do the sponsor stuff, you don't get everybody telling you how great you are all that (crap). You gotta keep your head in the game.

I teach my kids all the time, Steven coming up, I said, "You can't be one of these drivers that say, 'I can drive the car, but let this guy work on it. Let this guy tell me what to I see all these new guys come up and they go, "Man, I'm a great driver but I don't know how to work in a car." You gotta understand the car. I built my own cars, my short-track cars. I welded them. I painted them.

I loaded them. I did engine work. I did the whole thing. And you've got to be really, really involved in that chassis. You've got to be totally connected with that thing to be a consistent, successful individual.

So you believe you've got to be completely involved with your car to be Hell yeah, you do, man. I know everything thafs in my car. I can tell you air pressure, the shocks on that car, the springs on the car, the sway bars on the car. I walk up to some drivers and they go, "Man, I don't know what's in it. You have to ask my crew chief.

I have no clue." And there's a tot of good drivers like that. There's a lot of them that don't have a clue what" in their car. But I don't think you're going to be consistent. A lot of those good guys I just mentioned, if you took their crew chief away from them they'd fall right on their ass. They couldn't do it themselves, you know? I've been able to go through many crew chiefs and a lot of people and not miss a whole lot because I know what want in that car.

So I to have some underneath you That's Svhat's helped me to be consistent over all these years. time the dog went missing in the new episode "Who Killed Brock?" Herald Review readers.
