MASON, (Hubert) Harold
February 7, 1935 – August 27, 2024
Died peacefully surrounded by his family at the age of 89. Predeceased by wife Barbara Mason (nee Browne), parents Hubert and Alice Mason, brothers Tom and John. Harold was the eldest son of the Mason family of Pearce Avenue in Mundy Pond. Schooled at St. Teresa’s, Harold was an avid outdoorsman and automobile aficionado, gracing places such as Tors Cove, Manuels River, and anywhere there was a pond with fish in it with his unforgettable presence. None, however, held as fond a place in his heart as did Drummer’s Pond. Harold, after graduating from Commercial, found interest in communications technology, and after asking for his parents’ permission Canadian National Telecom (CNT) sent Harold, who was 17, on assignment for the best part of 20 years throughout the island, bringing telecom, broadcast and even radar technology to communities everywhere. In 1969, Harold had finished his work in Newfoundland moving to a home base of Toronto where he continued to work for CNT, installing communications equipment or CN rail systems and in the mid 1970’s leading teams off technicians installing the broadcast and communications arrays of the CN Tower. It was here that he and his wife Barbara raised their family. In the mid 1980’s Harold moved to specialize in the installation of cellular communications towers and in the early 1990s Harold moved to specialize in the outfitting of television stations with major projects including the CBC Building on Front Street Iin Toronto, CBC in St. John’s and the first HD television station in Houston Texas. From the mid-1990s and to the early 2000’s, Harold continued his work in the US creating CBC’s Olympic broadcast centers for both the Atlanta and Salt Lake City, and returning to Toronto he managed the broadcast prefabrications of CBC’s Nagano Olympics broadcast center. Harold was a fine and true example of a family man, instilling in everyone around him the ethic of hard work, the healing power of a good laugh, the call to service for others, and the importance of strength in one’s faith. He was a devoted and caring husband to Barbara for 51 years, caring for her until the end of her life. He was a loving and cherished father and grandfather who left all of his family in awe of his strength and resilience. Thank you, Dr. Roger Butler, Trina Snook, and team, Palliative Paramedics Program especially April, Casey and Frank, community health nurses, and Erika & Michelle at Lawton’s for the support provided to Harold and his family.
